The surprise, and what felt like instant, success of Julien Baker's debut album 'Sprained Ankle' is something that I don't think will be matched in quite a while.
Of course, I'm not saying it was a surprise due to lack of talent involved, not at all. I'm saying that because from the outside looking in it doesn't really seem like anyone involved, including Baker herself, expected it to happen - but it did, and not only did the record pick up some steam toward the tail end of 2015 shortly after release, it just kept snowballing throughout 2016 as well, leaving behind an army of people waiting for new material leading into 2017.
Well, after ticking off just about every radio station play and festival slot that she could have wished for, Julien Baker has returned with a new track for 2017, titled 'Funeral Pyre' which you can listen to below:
The track largely offers more of what we have come to love Julien Baker's music for, which is great. Progression is good, but sometimes it's nice for an artist to really delve deep into the sound they make their name with before making a detour into a new direction.
If the presumed forthcoming new album can constantly match this much of a progression without diverted too much from her signature sound, I think Julien Baker could well be about to release my favourite record of the year.
